Important Towns:

Mandla and Kanha National Park

This 16th Century historical place was the capital of the famous Queen Durgawati. The glory, valour and beauty of Rani Durgawati are vividly described even now in the local folk tales and bards. The crumbling Mandla fort stands here as mute testimony to the golden period of her rule. A museum situated here depicts the life-style of the people living at that period of time.
KanhaIn the upper reaches of Narmada about 18 Kms from Mandla, the breath taking by beautiful Kanha National Park which boasts of several wild animals including the majestic Tiger, nestles amidst picturesque natural environment. Two tributaries of Narmada, ie. Hallon and Banjar flow through this park.
It has become one of the best National Parks of Asia, which has been described vividly by Rudyard Kipling in his famous creation Jungle Book. Tiger is the King of this National Park.

Hoshangabad

One of the big cities on the banks of Narmada. The Sethani ghat here is considered to be one of the beautiful ghats of the world. Narmada parikramis in the course of their circumambulation stay and worship Narmada Ma here. Parikramis may break their journey here for a short period. A beautiful Mandir on the banks of the river dedicated to Narmada Ma is visited by all Parikramis.


Indore, the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, was planned and built by the brave Holkar Queen Ahilyabai. It is a very important place as far as Narmada is concerned. The headquarters of Narmada Control Authority which has been created by Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal for implementing the NWDT Award, is located here. This 18th Century city has a few beautiful monuments associated with Holkar dynasty.

Mandu

Perched along the Vindhya ranges at an altitude of 2000 ft, this natural fort like capital city of Parmar rulers, belongs to 13th century. It is situated about 90 Kms from Indore, the Palace city connected with the love story of Rani Roopmathi and King Baz Bahadur. The folk tales describes the passionate love of Rani and her ardent devotion to Narmada. It is told that Rani Roopamathi was offering her prayers to Narmada every morning, before commencing her daily chore.

Jabalpur

An important city in the Defence Map of India, Jabalpur boasts of many things: world famous Ordinance factory, Agricultural Research Institute and beautiful natural spots. It has also earned a name in sports, as it was here the game 'Snooker' was developed. Jabalpur occupies an important place amongst towns situated on the banks of Narmada. For Narmada also it is a turning point in its course of 1312 Kms. The river which was flowing in mountainous terrain, all along hereto, enter the plane. It is also famous for beautiful marble artifacts/idols.
