(B) Major Projects Under Construction in Narmada Basin in M.P.:

1) Bargi Diversion:

Bargi diversion project is under construction. It envisages inter basin transfer of water from Narmada basin to Ganga basin, through canal (RBC) taken off from Bargi (Rani Awanti Bai Sagar Project) reservoir. It is a diversion scheme for irrigation of 2.45 lakh ha. CCA in Jabalpur, Rewa and Satna distt. The estimated cost of this project is Rs.1005.64 crores.

Kolar (Major) Project is under construction on river Kolar (a tributary of Narmada on right bank). A masonary dam of 45 M. height was constructed near village Lawakhedi in Sehore distt. The gross storage capacity of the dam is 270 Mcm and live storage capacity is 265 Mcm. The GCA of the project is 62752 ha. and CCA is 51000 ha. in addition to that this project is also supplying drinking water to Bhopal city.

3) Man Project:

Man (Major) Project is under construction near village Jeerabad in Dhar Distt .(on river Man a tributary of Narmada on right bank) It is envisages provision for irrigation in 15000 ha. land. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 108.11 Crores.

4) Jobat Project:

Jobat (Major) Project (Shaheed Chandra Shekar Azad Sagar) under construction on River Hathni  (a tributary of Narmada on right bank ) in Jhabua Distt. It will irrigate 9848 ha. of agriculture land in Dhar distt. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.96.00 Crores.

5) Indira Sagar Project:

The construction on Indira Sagar Project was started in 1988 by Narmada Valley Development Authority (Govt. of Madhya Pradesh) and an amount of Rs.1300 crore was spent till August, 2000. For the expeditious completion of the project, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh and National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) set-up a joint Corporation namely Narmada Hydro Development Corporation (NHDC) which started functioning from August, 2000. This Corporation is to complete the remaining works of I.S.P. including dam and power house but the canal system is to be completed by NVDA only. NVDA had already completed its share of 50% works before the work was undertaken by the Corporation. The NHDC has completed 13% of the remaining 50% of works in one year and is making efforts to commission a few turbines by the year 2003. This project is likely to be completed by the 2005. The NHDC would be spending Rs.3000 to 4000 crores on ISP and also on Omkareshwar Project.

6) Omkareshwar Project:

The Omkareshwar Project is a project downstream of Indira Sagar Project. All survey, investigation works have been completed in 1993. This project was posed for privatization which caused delay in start of construction. For the expeditious completion of the project, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh and National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) set-up a joint Corporation namely Narmada Hydro Development Corporation (NHDC) which started functioning from August, 2000. The work on Omkareshwar dam project is likely to be started in 2001 at an estimated cost of Rs.1600 crore. The project is likely to be completed by November, 2007. Though the efforts would be made to complete the work by June, 2006. The global tenders have been invited for this dam and 23 big companies have submitted their tenders.

7) Maheshwar Hydel Project (M.P.)

The Maheshwar Hydel Project located about 40 km downstream of Omkareshwar multi-purpose project on main Narmada near Mandleshwar town in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh envisages construction of a 35 m high concrete dam with 670 m long spillway and having earthen flanks on the left and right banks of lengths 1573 m and 464 m respectively and a surface power house of 400 MW (10 x 40 MW) on the right bank.

After obtaining statutory clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests in January, 1994 and techno-economic clearance of CEA, the project has been awarded to private sector - Shri Maheshwar Hydel Power Corporation Limited (SMHPCL) - for which power purchase agreement was signed by MPEB in November, 1994. The original estimate of the project was revised from Rs. 465.63 crore to Rs. 1569 crore in December, 1996. Now the estimate is again under revision. By taking over of the project by SMHPCL the construction work of Dam and Power houses have started. However, progress of work is slow. By the end of March, 2001, about 47.8% of total projected quantity of excavation of 25,22,714 cum. has been completed. About 102153 cum of concreting has been achieved out a total estimated quantity of 9,52,260 cum., thus giving a progress of 10.70% only. Component-wise, 44% concreting in non-overflow dam (blocks 30,31 and 41-44), 7.5% in power house area and 6.8% in spillway area has been completed by March-2001.

8) Narmada Main Canal (Sardar Sarovar Project):

The works under N.M.C. Phase-I (km 0.0 to 144.5) have been completed in all respects.
  • Works in the reach between R.D. 144.5 km to 263.165 km (i.e. NMC phase.II-A) have been distributed into ten packages pertaining to Canal earthwork and seven packages for major structures. All these packages (except package-III) are in advanced stages of completion. About 97% of excavation, 98% of lining and 99% of structural concrete have been executed. Package-III is scheduled to be completed by December, 2001.
  • Out of seven major structures under Phase-II A, canal syphons on river Shedi, Saidak, Meshwo, Khari and Sabarmati have been completed. Canal structures on Watrak & Mohar are scheduled to be completed by Dec.2001.
  • The works in the portion of canal between R.D. 263.165 km to 388.164 km (i.e. NMC Phase-II B) is in progress.
  • The works in the reach from R.D. 357.196 km to 388.164 km are scheduled to commence in June,2001 and the works in the reach from R.D. 388.164 km to 458.412 km in Phase-II C are scheduled to be started in October 2001. In these reaches, land acquisition is in progress.
  • The work of Narmada Canal System in Rajasthan portion in the reach R.D. 0 to 48 km is in progress. Earthwork and masonry structures between R.D. 0 to 30 km have been completed, except in few patches where land acquisition problems have been encountered. Concrete lining in the initial reach from R.D. 0 km to 7.70 km has been completed during the reported period.
